Methyl salicylic acid

Plants containing salicylic acid have been used for centuries to reduce pain and inflammation. The methyl salicylic acid in the essential oil of wintergreen was successfully used to produce salicylic acid as early as 1844. 1

Methyl salicylic acid is a colourless, sweet-smelling, viscous compound. Pharmacological and clinical studies have shown that methyl salicylate is converted to salicylic acid in the body. It is used topically as a cream to treat acute pain. 2

Comfrey root extract

The comfrey is a perennial native plant in Europe and Asia. It is very widespread throughout Europe, including Hungary.

It particularly likes moist soil. Both its root and the leaves are used for medicinal purposes. It has been shown to contain a number of active substances, including alkaloids, carbohydrates, triterpenes, tannins, allantoin, organic acids, and vitamins A and B12.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommends its use in the form of a cream for strains, bruises, sports or accidental sprains, and joint and muscle pain. Also for the treatment of sprains, swellings, and haematomas after various closed injuries in order to improve motor function. 1

Aloe vera leaf fluid

Aloe vera has been known for its healing properties for at least 6,000 years. There are more than 300 species of aloe plant, but Aloe barbadensis (also known as Aloe vera or Medical aloe) is the best known and is regularly used in the health and beauty industry for its healing properties.

Aloe gel, which is often found in creams and moisturisers, can help in skin care when applied topically. However, it is less well known that the salicylic acid in Aloe vera may also act as a painkiller. 1
