Cross-links CL-HA

The longer intra-articular residence time of Optivisc Single™ is the result of the stabilising cross-linking process. As a consequence of cross-linking, individual hyaluronic acid molecules are unable to move independently, which is likely to result in limited exposure with regard to the catabolism (degradation) of hyaluronic acid molecules. The cross-linked structure is also a major obstacle for extracellular degradation processes and enzymes, making it difficult to reach the degradation sites.

In the patented production process of Optivisc Single™, the cross-linking of the hyaluronic acid chains occurs in a single step, using a so-called monophase technique. The monophase process creates an extremely homogeneous super-structure of microspheres weighing billions of daltons. The homogeneous gel, despite the higher active ingredient content (density), remains easy to apply.
